RIO NEGRO is the poetic encounter with a Maya community in the Guatemalan highlands, whose survivors live with the ever-present legacy of the civil war. The film follows three families who survived the massacres of the 1980s as they struggle to preserve their memory, traditions, and identity-under pressure from global economic forces and the ongoing impact of colonialism. At the heart of the film are Julian, the village chronicler; his granddaughter Sheyla, who embodies the new generation; and his daughter Johanna Cecilia, who was illegally adopted to Sweden during the war and now returns to Rio Negro for the first time in 40 years.
